For players of stringed instruments, the allure of J. S. Bach’s unaccompanied works is easy to understand. A string player, unlike a pianist or other keyboardist, nearly always performs great music as part of a group. A cog in the machine, a member of a committee, he enjoys a front-row seat from which to behold the miracle — no small thing, admittedly. But to be the lone performer of a solo work is a very different experience.
Both sets are “about” the instrument for which they were written, but the Suites rely deeply on the sonic properties of the cello — its resonance, its underbelly of sound, its bass-ness — properties to which a smaller member of the string family can never quite aspire. A viola performance of a Cello Suite, even a very fine one, will inevitably be somewhat reduced in sound-scope, a scale model of the original. When we turn to the violin works, on the other hand, we are immediately conscious that this music was written for our closer cousin, one whose physics and technique are nearly our own. In performing these works, a violist can pursue completely the same ideals of expression, interpretation and sonority as can a violinist.
